Mr. Wilson warmly welcomed the children into the hall for an assembly focused on Christmas traditions around the world. He highlighted how these traditions can seem vastly different yet share the unifying spirit of Christmas. He explained that in Greenland, it is traditional to eat squares of whale blubber, while in Japan, many people celebrate Christmas by enjoying KFC chicken. In contrast, our tradition typically centers around a turkey.
The theme of unity during the Christmas season was vividly illustrated by the events of 1914 during World War I. Mr. Wilson recounted how, as Christmas approached, soldiers in the trenches began singing Silent Night. Small Christmas trees adorned the bunkers, and in some areas along the front line, soldiers ventured into no man’s land to play football together. These moments demonstrated the powerful ability of Christmas to bring people together, even in the most challenging circumstances.
We were also thrilled to welcome Mayor Cherry McCredie to our assembly. She had the honor of announcing the winner of the Christmas Card Competition. The mayor shared how impressed she was by the creativity shown in all the entries from local schools, noting how challenging it was to select the four runners-up and the overall winner.
The assembly erupted in applause for the runners-up: Katie from Reception, Arthur from Year 1, Ethan from Year 2, and Eloise from Year 4. Each received a certificate and prize from the mayor. The highlight of the event was the announcement of Louise from Year 3 as the overall winner of this prestigious competition.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the competition! It was a delight to see Coopersale Hall achieve such success with both runner-up and winning entries.
