Year 6 Rise to the Challenge of their Bikeability Course

Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed their Bikeability course this week!

The children were initially divided into two groups and walked their bikes down to the Astroturf, where they learned how to mount, steer, and use their brakes. They also carefully checked that their bikes were safe to ride, ensured their clothing was appropriate for cycling, and that their helmets were correctly fitted. Everyone actively participated in these discussions, recognising the importance of being roadworthy before heading out on their bikes.

Cycling around the Astroturf helped the children build confidence in stopping safely without colliding with others. They also practised riding in different directions, forming a “snake” while signaling left, right, and stopping—all while attentively following instructions.

Later, they applied the skills they had learned by riding down the lane, ensuring they were positioned safely when turning and cycling on the road.

The two-day course allowed them to consistently review their drills, refine their ability to turn into and out of junctions, and develop a solid understanding of road signs and their meanings

At the end of the course, the children took time to reflect on their learning experience, share their thoughts, and express how valuable it was to understand road safety. This knowledge will enable them to enjoy cycling confidently and responsibly.

Well done, Year 6, for your determination in completing your Bikeability Level 2 certificate—you definitely deserved it! A big thank you to the instructors who made this possible.
