Science House Challenge

The children gathered for our Friday Assembly and were delighted to learn that this Sunday, 10th November, marks World Science Day. This day aims to raise awareness about the importance of science, encourage the sharing of ideas, and foster cooperation to understand global challenges and commit to supporting and improving our environment.

Mrs. Carter, along with the Year 3, 4 and 5 pupils discussed what science entails. They explained that science involves making observations, predictions, and conducting experiments to better understand the world around us and everything in the universe.

The term OBSERVATION refers to exploring using our five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. PREDICTION means considering potential outcomes and anticipating the results of experiments. The children were introduced to various pieces of equipment useful for conducting experiments.

The Science Club members enjoyed participating in fun experiments during their sessions and discovered activities they could also try at home. They conducted several experiments that explored the plants and animals around the school and in the pond, allowing them to observe and appreciate nature and local wildlife. Additionally, they used autumn leaves to create a colorful display for everyone to enjoy.

As the assembly concluded, the children were encouraged to celebrate World Science Day by participating in a Science House Challenge, which included four tasks:

  1. Explore – Go outside to observe and write about or identify what you find, or create a nature-inspired picture.
  2. Research – Watch an interesting science program, write a short synopsis, and identify the program. You may also create a poster outlining what you learned.
  3. Discover – Complete an experiment and present your findings using a table, graph, or photograph.
  4. Recycle – Create something interesting from recycled materials found at home, highlighting awareness of our environmental impact.

Children were welcome to complete as many challenges as they wished; the more challenges they completed, the more points their house would earn. All submissions were due by Thursday, 14th November, and Mrs. Carter would announce the winning house during the next Friday assembly. She encouraged everyone to participate in these fun science activities and to enjoy celebrating World Science Day.
