Santa brings his Reindeer to Coopersale Hall School

The pupils at Coopersale Hall School were thrilled to receive a visit from Santa today, accompanied by his reindeer, Blitzen and Steve!

James and Jay from Popsy’s, based in Maldon, were impressed by how much the pupils already knew about reindeer. The children enthusiastically shared interesting facts and learned even more during the visit.

For instance, they discovered that reindeer have four stomachs and eat grass, mushrooms, and lichen—a type of fern that is toxic to all other animals. Although reindeer are primarily vegetarian, they will eat fish if food is scarce.

Reindeer face five main predators: wolves, Arctic foxes, mountain leopards, humans, and polar bears. Interestingly, polar bears have only become a predator in the last 10 years, primarily due to climate change.

Both male and female reindeer grow antlers, although the males’ antlers are larger. Reindeer’s wide, flat feet give them an advantage against predators, allowing them to glide effortlessly across deep snow. Predators such as wolves and polar bears, on the other hand, sink into the snow, giving the reindeer a better chance to escape.

Meeting Santa was a magical experience, and the pupils were delighted to tell him how much they were looking forward to his upcoming visit on Christmas Eve!

A heartfelt thank you to FOCH for organising such a special day for the pupils and for all their hard work in the Elf Grotto.
